STOP Court Aims To Improve Public Safety By Focusing On Traffic Offenders With Multiple Violations
Municipal Court Judge Heidi Almase To Oversee New Specialty Court On Thursdays

A new specialty court, STOP Court, has been created by Municipal Judge Heidi Almase to focus on chronic traffic violators who are making Las Vegas streets unsafe. The Serious Traffic Offender Program, or STOP Court, is designed to establish connections with multiple agencies to put repeat traffic offenders through a program that will change their behavior and improve public safety.

The court focuses on drivers who obtain 10 or more moving violations in a year, and is a partnership between Municipal Court, the Nevada Department of Transportation, Nevada Highway Patrol, Metro Police and the city of Las Vegas.

“We always seem to hear about these horrific accidents, and my goal with STOP Court is to change the mindset of chronic traffic violators in the hope that we will see far less tragedies on our roadways,” Judge Almase said. “Stop Court has partnered with the Nevada Department of Transportation’s Zero Fatalities campaign and we’ll do our part to make that a reality.”

Each defendant in the program is required to have one open case with 180 days of jail suspended, must obtain no traffic violations, obtain a valid driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance, as well as pay all pre-existing traffic fines.

In 2012, 132,217 traffic charges were filed in Municipal Courts statewide. The city of Las Vegas Municipal Court disposed of 98,678 of those cases.

STOP Court is held in Municipal Court Department 3 on the fifth floor of the Regional Justice Center at 9 a.m. on Thursdays. Media interested in attending should fill out a courtroom media request form  and fax it back to the number listed at the top of the form.
