Keep Las Vegas Beautiful Sponsors Art Contest And Cleanups
High School Students Invited To Enter Art Contest By April 12

 

Keep Las Vegas Beautiful is sponsoring a youth art contest and several neighborhood cleanups this spring in conjunction with Earth Day observance and the national Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup campaign. 

In partnership with the Clark County School District School-Community Partnership Program and Republic Services, Keep Las Vegas Beautiful is hosting the Third Annual “Earth Day Everyday Art Contest” for high school students in grades 9-12. The top three winners and 17 runners-up will be displayed April 20-21 at Town Square, 6605 Las Vegas Boulevard South, as part of the center’s Earth Day weekend celebration. Entries are due by 4 p.m. April 12. See the guidelines for complete entry instructions.      

Keep Las Vegas Beautiful also has neighborhood and park cleanups scheduled through June 8. Everyone is encouraged to participate. Check the list below to join in a cleanup that is already scheduled, or call (702) 229-5406 to inquire about establishing a new cleanup location. 

The Keep Las Vegas Beautiful consortium, the Las Vegas chapter of Keep America Beautiful, includes representatives from the city of Las Vegas, Clark County School District, Republic Services, the University of Nevada, Don’t Trash Nevada, Outside Las Vegas Foundation, Southern Nevada Graffiti Coalition, NV Energy, Nevada Department of Environmental Protection, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, and UNLV Rebel Recycling.

  • Saturday, April 13, 2013; 8:30 a.m. to noon.
    Up to 100 Starbucks volunteers are anticipated to clean up Woofter, Pioneer, and Bill Briare parks, as well as the Bonanza and Lone Mountain trails in Ward 1.
  • Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m.
    Volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Elkhorn Springs Stake will be participating in hydrant and curb painting in the area around Elkhorn Community Association.
  • Saturday, April 20, 8 to 11 a.m.
    General cleanup in the area surrounding the Siegel Suites on Charleston at Fourth Street as part of Metro Police’s Downtown 360 initiative.
  • Wednesday, April 24, time to be determined.
    Up to 100 Starbucks volunteers will be participating in a neighborhood and park cleanup at Patriot Community Park, 4050 Thom Ave. Call (702) 229-5406 for more details.
  • Friday, April 26, 2 to 5 p.m.
    Starbucks volunteers will clean the sand lots, playground, and landscaping areas at Aloha Shores Park, as well as paint red curbs and fire hydrants in Ward 1. This volunteer cleanup is organized by the Outside Las Vegas Foundation with support from the city of Las Vegas. 
  • Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m.
    Lied Middle School will do a general cleanup of Polly Gonzalez Park.
  • Saturday, May 4, 2013, time to be determined.
    Approximately 40 volunteers from MGM Resorts Aria Team will clean up Rainbow Family Park. The team will be clearing clippings and debris in the landscaping around the parking lot and in the raised planter beds, picking up litter, and sifting the sandlots in the children's play area to remove debris and rocks. 
  • Saturday, May 4, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    The Holy Spirit Lutheran Church will do a park beautification project at Durango Hills Park.  They will clean up trash and debris in the park, and paint fencing around the skate park and the basketball courts. 
  • Sunday, May 19, time to be determined.
    Lululemon Athletica volunteers will pick up litter and clean up the children’s playground around the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center in Ward 2. Call (702) 229-5406 for more details.
  • Saturday, June 8, 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.
    Downtown Ambassadors cleanup – 300 volunteers in the Gateway area will pick up trash, clean up alleys, abate weeds and graffiti.
