A northwest Las Vegas home was damaged after a fire started in one of the bedrooms. No one was home at the time of the fire. The cause is still under investigation. There were no reported injuries.
Neighbors called 9-1-1 operators at 8:33 a.m. and reported that a house at 1709 Battle Creek Circle (Torrey Pines/Vegas) had thick, black smoke coming from it. When firefighters arrived a few minutes later, they found the one story, wood frame house with thick smoke coming from it and fire coming out of one rear window.
No one was home at the time, firefighters had to force entry into the home. They crawled in and found the fire in one of the bedrooms. They had the fire under control and extinguished in just a few minutes.
The fire did heavy damage to the bedroom, but firefighters were able to contain it to that room. There was some damage to the hallway and smoke damage throughout the rest of the house. Damage was estimated at $30,000.
Fire investigators believe the fire started on a mattress in the bedroom. Because no one was home at the time, fire investigators need to talk to all the occupants before making a final determination. Investigators said the fire appears to be accidental in nature and may be smoking related.
The American Red Cross is assisting three adults and one child who live in the house.
