Cooking Fire Heavily Damages Eastside Apartment
One Pet Dog Died In The Fire

A cooking fire erupted in the kitchen of an eastside Las Vegas apartment late Sunday afternoon.  The only person in the apartment at the time of the fire was able to escape without injury.  The American Red Cross is assisting the family of four.

Fire dispatchers received several calls at 4:27 p.m. that an apartment was on fire at the Playa Vista Apartments, 3700 E. Bonanza Road (at Pecos).  When firefighters arrived, heavy flames and smoke were coming out the front window and door of an upstairs apartment.  Firefighters went up to the apartment and had the fire under control and extinguished in just a few minutes.

The fire gutted the kitchen and living room of the unit. The two bedrooms on either side of the unit had heavy heat and smoke damage.  Damage was estimated at $50,000.

The only occupant in the apartment at the time of the fire told fire investigators she was cooking and then heard a small explosion on the stove.  Fire investigators believe that cooking greased flashed on fire and quickly spread.  They ruled the fire accidental.

Three adults and one child are displaced by the fire.  The family received assistance from  the American Red Cross and the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Foundation.

Firefighters found a large dog in the rear of one of the bedrooms.  It appeared the dog was trying to hide from the fire.  It appeared the dog was overcome by smoke.
