Las Vegas fire investigators determined that a fire that heavily damaged a northwest Las Vegas home late Wednesday afternoon was intentionally set. Four pets died in the fire. Two adults and one infant are displaced because of the fire.
Fire dispatchers received multiple calls at 3:01 p.m. that a house at 6920 Brier Creek Lane (Grand Teton/Tenaya) was on fire. When firefighters arrived a few minutes later, heavy flames and black smoke were coming out a window on the side of the house. The fire was fierce enough that the heat broke the windows on the neighboring home just a few feet away. Firefighters first took their fire hoses and knocked down the fire, advancing on the neighbor’s home before entering the house to fight the main fire.
The garage door was open to the house, so firefighters went inside and found the bedroom on fire. They had the fire knocked down and practically out in about five minutes.
The fire gutted the bedroom. The rest of the house had heavy black smoke damage throughout. Damage was estimated at $50,000.
A woman, her daughter and an infant live in the house. They were not home when the fire started. They came home to find smoke coming from the home and then heavy flames coming out the bedroom window. They called 9-1-1 on their cellphone. A neighbor driving by stopped and pulled a garden hose from a neighboring home and tried putting water on the fire from outside but it was too intense.
The homeowner then opened the garage door and the front door yelling for her three pet dogs to come out. They never made it out. Three small dogs and an exotic bird died in the fire.
Neighbors told the woman that a car had stopped in front of her house only minutes before and that someone got out and threw something through the bedroom window. The person then left and a few minutes later smoke started coming out the window.
The American Red Cross is assisting the three people who live in the house.
Later in the evening, Metro Police was able to find a suspect and they were taken into custody. Charges are pending against the individual, some of which will be related to the fire. Metro Police will file all charges.
There were no injuries in connection with the incident.
