Councilman RossA NOTE FROM COUNCILMAN ROSS
We need your help to save some fruit trees. Stephen Aizenberg with Spinnaker Homes has had to “hand water” the orchard property adjacent to Arbor View High School.  Unfortunately, the water that fed the trees on this site was “turned-off” as it was controlled by another property. As a community partner, Mr. Aizenberg wants to save as many fruit trees as possible. He is offering any resident the opportunity to come to the property from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, to pick up a tree. Here is the catch -- you need to dig up the tree and transport it yourself, but it is free!

This is a great opportunity for you to have a piece of Las Vegas history in your own yard.  If you are interested in coming by the orchard next to Arbor View High School on Saturday, please contact my office and put your name on the list. You can e-mail Sheila Lambert by using the link to the right. I would personally like to thank Mr. Aizenberg for working with the community on attempting to protect these trees.

WARD 6 - INFORMATION FAIR

Campbell Rd., near Fort Apache Road and Severence Lane.

Councilman Ross will host representatives from the city’s departments of Public Works and Leisure Services, Clark County’s departments of Public Works and Parks and Recreation, the Nevada Department of Transportation, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Nevada Power, the Las Vegas Valley Water District, developers such as the Focus Group (Kyle Canyon project) and Triple Five (Great Mall) as well as area and community organizations, including Little League to Lacrosse, to provide information and answers to concerns and questions for constituents in Ward 6.

LONE MOUNTAIN ROAD –  BETWEEN DECATUR & LOS PRADOS/CAMINO DEL ORO
Lone Mountain Road between Decatur Boulevard and Los Prados/Camino del Oro Boulevard was completely closed to traffic due to sewer system repair work. The road was reopened last night at 7 p.m. There may need to be other closures to get this work complete.

Craig Road and Ann Road are suggested as alternate routes for east-west travel while work is underway. Traffic delays and disruptions can also be expected at the Lone Mountain Road and Decatur Boulevard intersection.

TEN TIPS FOR MAKING SURE YOUR CONTRACTOR IS ON THE LEVEL

1.  Hire only licensed contractors.
2.  Check the contractor’s license number by calling the Nevada State Contractors Board at (702) 486-1100 in Southern Nevada or (775) 688-1141 in Northern Nevada, or at: www.nscb.state.nv.us
3.  Get three references and review past work.
4.  Get at least three bids.
5.  Get a written contract and do not sign anything until you completely understand the terms.
6.  For pool contracts, pay 10% down or $1,000 - whichever is less, if a deposit is required.
7.  Don’t let payments get ahead of the work. Keep a record of all payments.
8.  Don’t make a final payment until you are satisfied with the job.
9.  Don’t pay cash.
10.  Keep a job file of all papers relating to your project.

CHILDREN’S BOOK FESTIVAL
The Office of Cultural Affairs of the city of Las Vegas Government and Community Affairs Department presents the first Target Children’s Book Festival on Saturday, November 4, from noon to 4 p.m. The event will be held in downtown Las Vegas at the Lewis Street Corridor and Centennial Plaza located at 4th Street and Lewis Avenue.

Target® collaborated with the Office of Cultural Affairs to provide this free event to the youth of the Las Vegas valley. This event will feature celebrity readings, live theatrical performances, local book exchanges and fun. There will also be information stations and interactive activities hosted by the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, Clark County School District, Vegas PBS Ready to Learn, Valley Braille Service Inc; 2006 Governor's Points of Light Award nominee Spread the Word Nevada Kids to Kids, Bodies The Exhibition, Titanic The Artifacts Exhibition and many more organizations.

The average 4th grader in Nevada reads below the basic reading level. In 2005, Nevada’s youth ranked 43rd nationally in reading. The city of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs is working to close that reading gap through ventures like this youth book festival.

Target® gives back more than $2 million a week to its local communities through grants and special programs. Since opening its first store in 1962, Target has partnered with nonprofit organizations, guests and team members to help meet community needs.  Additionally, Target team members and retirees donate more than 315,000 hours to more than 7,000 projects each year.

The Target Children’s Book Festival is a program of the Vegas Valley Book Festival, which is presented by Nevada Humanities and the city of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs. The Vegas Valley Book Festival runs November 3 to 4, and is centered in downtown Las Vegas.

CITY OF LAS VEGAS UNVEILS PLANS FOR ONE OF THE LARGEST JEWELRY PROJECTS IN THE WORLD
City of Las Vegas officials, in conjunction with Probity International Corporation, recently unveiled plans for one of the largest jewelry projects in the world, the approximately one-million square foot mixed-use World Jewelry Center (WJC). The WJC will combine the corporate offices of several hundred domestic and international gem and jewelry companies in a trade tower that will be one of the tallest office buildings in Las Vegas along with a separate, free-standing gallery of retail jewelry stores with broad middle-market appeal. The WJC is planned to open for business in late 2009 to mid 2010.

The WJC is being designed by award-winning Altoon & Porter Architects and the cornerstone will be an iconic, state-of-the-art office tower.Tenants will own their own subdivided space in the tower, which will also include meeting and exhibition facilities, several international restaurants, a private club and a fitness center. The top floors of the tower will be dedicated to luxury residential condominiums with panoramic views. The adjacent three-story retail jewelry center will have a world-class gem and jewelry museum and exhibition space open to the public. The retail center will be designed to educate and excite the general public about gems and jewelry by building confidence in the products designed and manufactured from around the globe.

The center will be built with every amenity and service in mind to make the WJC the world’s premier fully integrated, service-oriented business hub catering to international and domestic retailers, manufacturers, dealers, and wholesalers in the gem, jewelry and pearl industries. The WJC will include:  state-of-the-art security, secure shipping and receiving, gem grading labs and educational facilities, trade associations, and plans for a dedicated Foreign Trade Zone.
