Flu Season Kicks Into High Gear

It’s that time of the year when a headache and sore throat can lead to something much worse – the flu. This year, one in five will get Influenza, more commonly known as the flu, but it can be prevented by following some healthy habits.
Practicing basic hygiene habits is one of the best ways to help prevent the flu: • Stay healthy – eat well, drink lots of fluids, exercise and get plenty of rest. • Wash your hands with warm, soapy water for at least 30 seconds. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. • Avoid contact with people who are sick. • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you sneeze. Dispose of the tissue after use. • If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, stay home from school, work or other social gatherings.
Another way to protect yourself from the flu is to get a flu vaccination. Flu shots are available at doctors’ offices and clinics in drugstores and community centers. Visit www.flucliniclocator.org/ to find an upcoming flu shot clinic in your neighborhoood.
More information on the flu can be found at the “Fight The Flu” Web site . The Southern Nevada Health District created the new campaign to help educate the public on flu symptoms, how to avoid it and how to be prepared in the case of a flu pandemic.
