City Focuses On Diversity Efforts For Public And Employees

Workers tend to hear the word “diversity” a lot these days and for good reason. With ever-changing workplace demographics it’s important for employers and employees to understand what diversity is and isn’t. The city of Las Vegas has been proactive in learning more about diversity issues in an effort to better serve the public and city employees. The overall idea is simple: a diverse community makes for a better community.

Earlier this year, the city of Las Vegas created a diversity committee, consisting of executive representatives of all city departments. This group recently went through diversity training, which emphasized understanding the dynamics of diversity and overcoming personal barriers. It also helped clear up misconceptions about diversity. For example, city staff learned that diversity is about personal leadership and respect for all people, not affirmative action or quotas. The City Council also recently received presentations from diversity experts.

The city also created a Cultural Affairs Office, which schedules and plans events and activities with diversity in mind. Throughout the year, the city recognizes various cultures with events and activities ranging from Women’s History Month in March to a celebration of America in July. Throughout the last month, the city has been hosting “A December to Remember,” which presents special holiday programs that showcase the diversity in our own community. For more information on these upcoming events, see the related article “Holiday Activities.”

Earlier this year, the city was recognized for its diversity efforts. The city was honored with a 2006 Diversity Award by the Southern Nevada Human Resources Association  for its diversity programs.
