Primary Election Yields Several Winners

The Municipal Primary Election, held on Tuesday, April 3, resulted in several declared winners. The Las Vegas City Charter provides that if one candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote during the Primary Election, then he / she is declared the winner and no General Election will be held.
As a result of the Primary Election, three elected officials running for re-election were declared winners including Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, Ward 3 Councilman Gary Reese and Ward 1 Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian. They will be sworn in during the Wednesday, April 18, City Council meeting.
Two races, the seats for City Council Ward 5 and Municipal Court Judge, Department 6, will be decided at the Tuesday, June 5, General Election. No candidate received the required 50 percent of the vote in those two races to be declared the winner in the Primary Election. Registered voters throughout the city are eligible to vote in the Municipal Court race, but only registered voters residing in Ward 5 can vote for the Ward 5 representative.
City residents have until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, to register to vote in the General Election. For more information on the General Election, please visit the Election 2007 Web site.
