Renovations To Downtown ‘Cultural Center’ Begins

Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese and other officials recently celebrated the start of renovations to the historic Fifth Street School. The school, which opened in 1936, is located at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Clark Avenue.
The 70-year-old building was constructed by the federal government during the Depression Era at the same time as the Hoover Dam. The facility and its site, which is owned and being redeveloped by the Redevelopment Agency, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was the first permanent Las Vegas elementary school and served grades one through six for more than 30 years.
The $9.5 million renovation project includes the installation of a new heating and air conditioning system, new electrical, plumbing and life safety systems. New interior finishes are planned along with new clay tile roofing, a new parking lot, new landscaping and restoration of exteriors to their original appearance. When complete, the 28,900 square foot building will house an assortment of local art organizations as tenants including the Nevada School of the Arts, a nonprofit organization promoting music education; University of Nevada, Las Vegas Downtown Design Center, home to the UNLV College of Fine Arts and School of Architecture ; and the Las Vegas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects .
Renovations to the Fifth Street School are slated for completion in the second quarter of 2008.
