Whether you are hanging out at one of the city pools or taking a dip in your backyard pool, don’t forget to follow a few simple safety tips to enjoy a safe, injury-free summer.

• Learn to swim. Many accidents can be avoided by being a competent swimmer.
• Learn Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation or CPR.  Make sure that others who may be supervising children or nonswimmers also know CPR. CPR classes are taught at a number of city pools.
• Post emergency information near your swimming pool including CPR instructions and local emergency contact phone numbers.
• Keep basic life-saving equipment nearby at all times.
• Provide constant poolside supervision for children and those who may not be experienced swimmers.
• Install a locking fence around the pool’s perimeter. Make sure the openings around the fence are not large enough for small children to squeeze through.
• Secure doors and windows that lead to the pool area. This includes “doggie” doors, which may provide access for small children.
• Remove pool covers and toys from the swimming pool as they may attract children to the pool.
• Never leave a child alone near the water, not even for a second.
• Teach children basic safety rules to follow in and around the pool such as no running, diving, jumping or pushing.
• Keep radios and other electrical appliances away from the pool.
• Clearly mark the deep end of the pool.
