City Department Celebrates 25 Years Of Service

When most people think of the city’s Detention and Enforcement Department, they see images of city marshals patrolling facilities such as parks or City Hall. But this department does much, much more. In addition to providing law enforcement services through the deputy city marshals, the department oversees the city’s animal control unit as well as parking enforcement. It is also involved in the valley’s emergency preparedness planning and oversees operations of the city’s detention center, including inmate services, processing and bail. They’ve performed all of these services for 25 years now.

Led by Chief Karen Coyne, the department has more than 400 employees who work in a number of different fields such as corrections, deputy city marshals, parking enforcement, K-9, animal control and other support roles.

The department is one out of 26 law enforcement agencies in the nation to hold the prestigious Triple Crown Accreditation Award received from the National Sheriffs’ Association. The department holds accreditations from the American Correctional Association, the National Commission on Correctional Health Care and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

The department will be recognized at an upcoming City Council meeting with a proclamation declaring June 20 as Detention and Enforcement Department Day in Las Vegas.
