Centennial Grants Available For Historic Projects

In 2005, the city celebrated it 100th anniversary with a year full of events and activities. Even though the official anniversary date has passed, doesn’t mean the celebration is over.

The Commission for the Las Vegas Centennial  has established the History Grant Program to keep the celebration going. The program provides funding for community initiatives in support of the history, preservation and conservation of Las Vegas. The program is funded from the sale of special edition 100th anniversary license plates that were sold throughout the years leading up to the big celebration. The monies generated from the sale of the license plates went to fund the activities for the anniversary. With the continued success of the centennial license plates sales, funding is available to continue the legacy of the centennial celebration.

The focus of the program is to commemorate the history of the city of Las Vegas with projects such as historical markers, tours of historic sites and improvements to, or restoration of historic buildings or structures. Projects could include such things as rehabilitation of historic sites, structures and archeological resources, cultural heritage and tourism, oral history, historic surveys, creating museums and archives and education.

Applications  are accepted throughout the year. Grants can be awarded for up to $100,000 with a minimum of $5,000. Grant applications will be reviewed by the Las Vegas Centennial History Grants Committee, made up of city of Las Vegas staff. Recommendations will be forwarded to the Centennial Commission for a final decision.

The commemorative centennial license plate is still available for purchase. More information can be found on the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicle’s Web site .

More information on the program can be obtained through the grants Web page.
