Grants Available For Housing Programs And Community Improvement Projects

The city of Las Vegas has numerous grant opportunities to help our citizens get involved and improve the community.
The deadline for several grant programs is quickly approaching. These programs include the Youth Neighborhood Association Partnership Program (YNAPP), Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), Housing Opportunities for persons with AIDS (HOPWA) and Emergency Shelter Grants (ESG).
The YNAPP program provides grants in the amount of up to $1,000 to young Las Vegas residents who have ideas for community improvement projects. To qualify for the grants, the projects must be youth initiated and driven, located in the city limits of Las Vegas and done in partnership with a neighborhood association or organization. Past grant projects have included tutoring programs, community murals, and neighborhood and school cleanups. Applications for the upcoming year grants are being accepted until Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, at 5 p.m. For more information call 229-5390.
CDBG is a Federal Housing and Urban Development entitlement used to develop viable communities through decent, affordable housing and a suitable living environment. HOPWA provides funding for housing and supportive services and homeless prevention for low-income individuals with AIDS or related diseases or their family members. ESG is a federally funded entitlement program that provides supportive services for the homeless and homeless prevention programs.
The deadline for submitting completed applications for the three grants above is Friday, Sept. 28, 2007, at 4 p.m. in the city’s Neighborhood Services Department, located at 400 Stewart Ave., on the second floor of City Hall.
