Popular Senior Center To Undergo Renovation
The Doolittle Senior Center, a favorite among local seniors is currently closed to make way for a completely renovated and expanded center. On Oct. 24, Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow, who represents the area where the center is located, will officially kick-off the beginning of the renovation project.
The center, located at 950 N. J St., closed in late August of this year so that initial work could begin on the project. Programs such as card games, bingo, sewing, free blood pressure checks and special events, that would normally take place at the senior center, are continuing at the adjacent Doolittle Community Center.
The senior center will undergo a 4,595 square-foot expansion, making the facility 12,095 total square feet when complete. The new center will include a large fitness room, 1,200 square-foot game room, arts and crafts room, health services room, fitness room, dance and exercise room, library / TV room, conference room, multipurpose room and additional restrooms.
The construction is scheduled to take approximately one year with an anticipated re-opening in late summer or early fall 2008.
