Eat Healthy This Holiday Season

With so much food to choose from during the holiday season, how does one keep focused and avoid the extra calories? It can be easy if you follow a few simple tips.
• Choose a smaller plate. This will help prevent overfilling the plate. • Be careful high-calorie liquids. Drinks such as egg nog can be very high in calories. • Choose snacks wisely. Instead of having one of the cookies a co-worker brought into the office opt for a piece of fresh fruit instead. • Avoid arriving at a holiday gathering on an empty stomach, eat a healthy snack before leaving your home. • Survey the food options before digging in. Choose those foods that you can only get at this special time of year. • Watch your portion size when choosing side dishes. • If you do overeat, don’t just snooze. Get out, take a walk and burn off those calories you just consumed! • Chew your food thoroughly and take your time while eating. It will be easier for you to know when you are full. • If you are the chef, look for low-calorie substitutes when cooking. Also look for low or no sugar options for dessert. • Resist the urge to taste food when preparing it.
