Bring In The New Year Safely

Ringing in the new year can be exciting, but it can also be a potentially dangerous time as well. By following a few simple tips, you can ensure that you start the new year off in a safe and healthy manner.

• Consider enjoying non-alcoholic beverages such as cider. If you do drink alcohol, know your limits.
• Avoid driving if possible. New Year's Eve is known for an increased number of people driving under the influence.
• Use free-ride-home services provided by local cab organizations.
• If you are hosting a party, don’t let your guests drive when they are intoxicated. Arrange for cab service or provide a place for guests to stay overnight.
• Make sure to arrange for a designated driver, or another safe form of transportation, before going out on New Year's Eve.
• Look out for others. When out at New Year's Eve events, make sure that others are also acting safely.
• Traveling in groups is encouraged, especially for women, when going out to parties on New Year's Eve.
• Consult with local media before heading out for any road closures.
• Be aware of surroundings. By being vigilant of what's going on around you, individuals can more easily recognize a dangerous situation and begin taking any preventive measures.
• Do not use fireworks. Fireworks are illegal in Clark County on New Year’s Eve.
• Use the Citizens Area Transit bus service to get around town. From 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve to 6 p.m. on New Year’s Day, the transit provider offers free rides. For more information on route changes due to road closures, visit http://www.catride.com/ .

A number of New Year’s Eve events are planned in downtown Las Vegas and on the Las Vegas Strip. For more information visit the Las Vegas Convention and Visitor’s Authority Web site  .
