February Is Heart Healthy Month

When most people think of heart disease, they think of a heart attack, but the disease can take on many forms. It can include abnormal heart rhythms, heart failure, heart valve disease and much more. No matter what form it takes, it continues to be the number one killer in America.
The month of February is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and what you can do to prevent it. In addition, a special campaign “Go Red for Women” is aimed at bringing attention to the affects of heart disease on women.
While it may not be possible to control some contributing factors, such as family history and age, many others can be controlled. For example, smoking and lack of exercise are two lifestyle choices that can be addressed. In addition, conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and excess body weight can be addressed with some preventative care.
To address these issues, eat a healthy diet and get active. Lower your cholesterol level by eating a diet low in cholesterol and saturated fats and lower your blood pressure by eating a diet low in sodium. Medications for high blood pressure and cholesterol can also be an option and can be discussed with your doctor. Manage stress to a healthy level and if you smoke, seek help to stop.
