City Park And Recreation Center Update

With beautiful weather upon us, it’s a great time to head out to one of our city parks and recreation centers for some fun. Before you head out, make sure to check on some of the park refurbishment schedules and adjusted hours at some of the city’s recreation centers.

While many of the city’s recreation centers have been closed on Sunday for quite some time, 10 more facilities will be closed on Sundays because of low attendance numbers and budget concerns. The facilities that are now also closed on Sunday include:

Doolittle Community Center
Mirabelli Community Center
Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center
Chuck Minker Sports Complex
Dula Gymnasium
Reed Whipple Cultural Center (Sunday performances will continue, but the facility will not be open to public.)
West Las Vegas Arts Center
Charleston Heights Arts Center (Sunday performances will continue, but the facility will not be open to public.)
Pavilion Center Pool
Doolittle Pool

The Darling Tennis Center will continue to remain open on Sundays as will the Municipal Pool and the Carlos L. Martinez and Dario J. Hall Family Pool at Freedom Park during the summer swim season.

The east portion of Lorenzi Park, located at Washington Avenue and Twin Lakes Drive, is now closed for a complete renovation. The pond, Lorenzi Adaptive Center, Derfelt Senior Center, Nevada History Museum and the Garden Club will remain open during construction. Construction is expected to last one year.

Freedom Park will also be closing next month for a complete renovation. The little league fields on the northeast side of the park will remain open, as will the Carlos L. Martinez and Darrio J. Hall Family Pool at Freedom Park. The two little league fields will be closed; however, during the off season from October through May for remodel work. Construction is expected to last 18 months.

Work continues at Jaycee Park, located at the corner of St. Louis and Eastern avenues, where a $10 million renovation project is underway. The improvements include a new lighted soccer field and parking lot, a playground area and a small water feature.

There are numerous other parks throughout the city that are still available for activities. The online park finder can help you find other options in the city using search criteria such as location or desired features.
