Later this month, city officials and representatives from Newland Communities will celebrate the beginning of a new chapter in our city’s history as infrastructure work commences on Union Park, the 61-acre, mixed-use master-planned urban center in the heart of downtown Las Vegas.

The initial phase of work will take place on the southern portion of the 61 acres from Discovery Drive to Bonneville Avenue. The infrastructure work is expected to take seven months and will include, but is not limited to, site grading, roadway excavation and the installation of drainage features and structures, a temporary parking lot near the railroad, public streets including curbs and gutters, water and sewer system mains, utilities and traffic signage.

During the last year, the City Council has been busy preparing for the beginning of this infrastructure work. Last April, the council authorized $40 million in funding for the first phase of infrastructure of Union Park and approved a development agreement for the Smith Center for the Performing Arts , a planned 2,000-seat performing arts center.  In addition, construction of the Lou Ruvo Brain Institute  has continued and planning for the 50-story World Jewelry Center  moved forward. Now as the city breaks ground and moves forward with the infrastructure, the vision for the parcel can really begin to take shape.
