Summer Landscape Watering Restrictions Go Into Effect May 1

Summer is right around the corner and so are summer landscape water restrictions. The summer watering schedule, which goes into effect Thursday, May 1, and continues through Sunday, Aug. 31, allows for watering any day of the week.

Beginning on May 1, watering cannot be done between the hours of 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. This continues through Oct. 1. During the hottest hours of the day, water is often lost to evaporation from the heat and high winds. Watering during restricted hours is considered water waste and may result in a water waste citation.

The Southern Nevada Water Authority offers a number of tips for landscaping during the hot summer months:
• Use the “cycle and soak” method. Operate sprinklers in three short, four-minute cycles about an hour apart each watering day.
• Run drip irrigation in one long cycle.
• Don’t water on windy or rainy days.
• If you notice brown spots in your lawn, check your sprinklers to see if any of the heads are broken or twisted. Use a handheld hose to water the brown spots. This can be done at any hour.
• Monitor your landscape closely during the hot summer days and adjust watering times or add watering days only as needed.
