Ward 5 Road Projects

Below is information on several major road projects currently affecting Ward 5 commuters. For additional closures and roadwork, please visit the city’s  roadwork Web page.

Work Begins On Two New Ward 5 Traffic Signals In August
The city of Las Vegas plans has started work on installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of Rancho Drive and Palomino Lane. A signal at Rancho and Palomino will help improve the safety of this intersection, which accommodates an average of 40,000 vehicles each day, including traffic associated with area hospitals and Wasden Elementary School. A combination of day and night work will be performed.

A second traffic signal installation project for Ward 5 at the Washington Avenue and Comstock Drive intersection is scheduled to start later this month.

Between 16,000 and 20,000 vehicles per day travel through the Washington and Comstock intersection. And because nearby Bonanza Village residents have only Comstock as their one way in and out of their neighborhood, it has become increasingly difficult for drivers to exit onto Washington. The new signal will solve that problem and also will provide a pedestrian phase for the residents who walk to and from the nearby bus stops.

New Bike Lane Project In West Las Vegas
Another exciting project is heading to West Las Vegas. New bicycle safety lanes are being added on Vegas Drive/Owens Avenue, Washington Avenue, and Smoke Ranch Road. This new project will help make Las Vegas a more bicycle-friendly city. During the next 30 days, intermittent lane restrictions will be in effect on Vegas Drive/Owens Avenue, between Rancho Drive and Bruce Street, on Washington Avenue, between Rancho and Martin L. King Boulevard, and on Smoke Ranch Road, between Rancho and Rainbow Boulevard, as crews work to install bicycle safety lanes and signage on both sides of these roadways. Traffic lanes may be closed intermittently, while work is underway.

Work will take place during the daytime hours. Pedestrian access will be maintained. Parking may be temporarily impacted at some locations, however, parking will be available on adjacent side streets.

The work to install bicycle safety lanes should be completed in late April. Funding for the $100,000 project is provided by an American Recovery And Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG-R).

Martin L. King Boulevard and Madison Avenue

When the $45 million project is complete, Martin L. King Boulevard will become an efficient and much-needed corridor for north-south travel. Below are some of the latest project updates.

Symphony Park Avenue: Martin L. King to Grand Central Parkway – The roadway milling is completed. Paving should start Sunday night, June 13. When the paving has sufficiently cured, permanent traffic lane markings will be placed and work in this section will be finished.

These activities are taking place along Martin L. King Boulevard:

Symphony Park Avenue to Vegas Drive/Owens Avenue – The median islands and travel lanes are substantially complete. At least two travel lanes in each direction are being maintained and work on incidental items continues. Tree and shrub placement in the median islands will be completed this month. The final layer of road asphalt will be applied during the overnight hours, the week of June 13. When the paving has sufficiently cured, permanent traffic lane markings will be placed and work in this section will be completed.

Vegas Drive/Owens Avenue to Lake Mead Boulevard – Roadway and median island construction nears completion. As landscape work continues in the median islands and on the private lots, pedestrian and vehicular access is somewhat limited. Temporary walkways are in place to accommodate foot traffic and at least two travel lanes in each direction are maintained on Martin L. King at all times. The final layer of road asphalt will be applied the week of June 13. When the paving has sufficiently cured, permanent traffic lane markings will be placed and work in this section will be complete. Remaining work in this section should be completed in late June or early July.

Lake Mead Boulevard to Carey Avenue – Much of the construction has been completed. Pedestrian and vehicular access is somewhat limited at the north end of the project, and traffic lane shifts continue while the remaining work at the Justice Center and on private lots is completed. Temporary walkways are in place to accommodate pedestrian traffic. At least two lanes in each direction are maintained on Martin L. King at all times. Paving work in this section shall be completed during the week of July 19, 2010. After the paving has cured, the permanent traffic lane markings will be placed and crews will complete the landscaping items.

Motorists are urged to proceed with caution when driving along Martin L. King as it is an active construction zone.

Questions regarding the project should be directed the Martin L. King Boulevard Project Hotline at (702) 253-2336.

ACE Downtown Connector Construction on Casino Center Boulevard
New traffic signals at the intersections of Charleston Boulevard and Third Street, and at Main Street and Imperial Avenue, recently went into service.

The traffic signal installations are part of the ACE rapid transit improvement project. The city of Las Vegas is partnering with the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) to construct the first ACE rapid transit line, scheduled to debut in the spring of 2010. The project includes improvements along Casino Center Boulevard, between Ogden Avenue and Charleston. The project also includes improvements to Third, south of Charleston continuing to Imperial, and along sections of Main, Las Vegas Boulevard, St. Louis Avenue and Paradise Road to the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Dedicated rapid transit lanes are being built in the center of Casino Center and Third Street. These lanes will allow ACE to provide fast transit services that will seamlessly link downtown Las Vegas to the Las Vegas Strip. ACE rapid transit will also feature level-platform boarding, off-board fare collection and sleek, attractive vehicles.

The ACE Downtown Connector project will provide a high-grade rapid transit link between downtown Las Vegas and the southern resort corridor.

Bikes Belong
The Ward 5 Bike Coalition, which includes partners from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the Las Vegas Bike Club, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC), the Bikes Belong coalition and Interbike celebrated the completion of a bike lane installation project on J Street, between Washington and Carey Avenue. The International Bikes Belong, Interbike and the RTC donated grants totaling $10,000 to the city of Las Vegas for the installation of new bike lanes on J Street. The goal of the Ward 5 Bicycle Coalition is to make Las Vegas a more bicycle-friendly city and these grants are helping us do that.  Bike lanes have also been installed along H Street between Bonanza Road and Carey Avenue.
