City Council Approves Name For Downtown Museum

The museum that doesn’t exist now has an official name – the Las Vegas Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement also known as the Mob Museum. The City Council recently approved the name and the unveiled the museum’s logo at a recent meeting.

The Mob Museum, which is located in the former federal courthouse and post office building across from City Hall, is slated to be the capstone of ongoing redevelopment efforts in downtown Las Vegas. The building is included in both the Nevada and National Registers of Historic Places and is one of the last remaining historically significant buildings in Las Vegas.

The Museum will provide a balanced and candid look at the reality of organized crime across the country, how the mob shaped the building of Las Vegas and how it was ultimately dismantled through the valiant efforts of both local and national law enforcement agencies.

The museum comes after several years of planning by a nonprofit board, the 300 Stewart Avenue Corporation, which is led by Ellen Knowlton, former special agent in charge of the FBI’s Las Vegas field office.

The museum is expected to open in 2010. For more information on the museum’s progress, visit www.themobmuseum.org/ .
