October Is Code Compliance Month

The city of Las Vegas is proclaiming October as Code Compliance Month by reminding residents and businesses to make sure their properties are free of debris, weeds, trash and inoperable vehicles.

As the economy struggles, the city is seeing more dilapidated properties. In addition to being an eyesore, these dilapidated properties violate city code. If owners fail to clean up their properties, they could be required to pay back costs incurred by the city to address the problems, re-inspection fees and administrative fees. Owners could also be subject to daily civil penalties ranging from $500 to $1,000 at the discretion of the City Council. Detailed information on the fines that can be assessed can be found in Chapter 9 of the Las Vegas Municipal Code.

Code inspections are performed by the city’s Neighborhood Services Department on a complaint basis. Complaints can be filed with the department online or by calling the hotline at 229-6615. A brochure detailing some of the most common questions regarding code enforcement can be found online.
