Stay Safe This Halloween

Halloween is full of tricks and treats, and with goblins and witches out on the prowl, it’s a good idea to revisit some basic safety tips for the holiday.

Costumes

  • Use face paint rather than a mask. If you or your child wear a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough to see through clearly.
  • Wear light-colored or reflective materials.
  • If a costume includes a prop such as a sword, make sure it is made of soft material.
  • Make sure there is nothing hanging from a costume.
  • Ensure that costumes are made from fire proof materials.

Trick or Treating

  • Walk on sidewalks, not in the street and cross the street only at corners. Look both ways before crossing the street.
  • Always use a flashlight to help you spot obstacles.
  • Accept treats at the door only. Do not go into someone’s home to receive a treat.
  • Always trick or treat with groups and make sure an adult accompanies the group.
  • Visit only those homes that have porch lights on.
  • Be cautious of strangers.

Back at Home

  • Make sure adults inspect treats before they are eaten.
  • Never eat unwrapped candy, open candy or fruit.

There are many fall and Halloween activities planned for the coming weeks. For a complete list of activities, view the Halloween Happenings brochure
