City Continues Focus On Sustainable Activities

One of the city’s top initiatives is sustainability, which for the city means more than just being “green” — it is a way to ensure that current and future generations will enjoy the quality of life we have all worked so hard to achieve. It includes every aspect of our lives and it takes the whole community to make it work. Through a number of programs and activities, the city works hard to ensure that its operations are sustainable. Below is some information on two of the city’s latest activities.

Mayor Appointed To National Sustainability Board

Mayor Oscar B. Goodman was recently selected as one of 12 directors of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability U.S.A.
ICLEI, the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, is an international association of local governments and national and regional local government organizations that have made a commitment to sustainable development. More than 1,075 cities, towns, counties and their associations worldwide comprise ICLEI's growing membership.

City Of Las Vegas Fleet Among Nation’s Greenest

The city of Las Vegas continues to be a leader in alternative fuels and sustainability. SustainLane.com ranks the city’s fleet as the second greenest in the country behind only New Orleans. New Orleans has a fleet that is completely alternative-fueled. The city of Las Vegas has about 1,500 vehicles and 90 percent of them run on some type of alternative fuel.

The city’s fleet runs on hydrogen, compressed natural gas, biodiesel and hybrid technology. The city’s innovative approach to sustainability has received worldwide attention. The program won the award in the Transportation Category at the 2007 World Leadership Awards, and was a big part of the city being named American City of the Year.

Earth Fair 2009
