June 2009

There are two exciting events coming up in Ward 5 that I would like to invite all of you to attend. I hope to see you there!

The first is a celebration of the completion of the $11.4 million Lorenzi Park renovation from 7 to 10 p.m., on Saturday, June 27. This fun-filled event will feature fireworks, games, a jump house, performances by area schools, a softball tournament and tennis exhibition, as well as a dunk tank and more. Lorenzi Park is located at 3333 West Washington Ave.

Lorenzi recently underwent an improvement project that began in April 2008, and included a complete makeover on the east half of the 60-acre park. The new and improved area has new tennis courts and softball fields, upgraded field lighting, a new special events area and a new playground. The parking area was also expanded.

Lorenzi is one of Las Vegas’ oldest and most heavily used parks, but this renovation has transformed it into a brand new park with sparkling new amenities. Through a partnership with the BLM we were able to improve this park for the residents of all ages who have played in this park for years.

Project funding was provided by the Bureau of Land Management through the sale of public lands as authorized by the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA). This act keeps money from Nevada federal land sales in the state for parks and trail projects.

I would also like to invite you to join me for coffee, tea and conversation about the community from 9 to 10 a.m. on the first Thursday of every month. The first Ward 5 gathering is planned for Thursday, July 2, at the Starbucks at 751 N. Rancho Drive, Suite 110 (corner of Rancho Drive/Bonanza Road). It will give you the opportunity to speak directly with me on issues of concern.

I want to hear directly from you on issues that are important to you. Direct face-to-face communication is the best way to get a clear understanding of what residents want and for you to hear the challenges that have to be overcome to accomplish things.

The location for the Ward 5 gatherings will alternate monthly between the Starbucks at 751 N. Rancho Drive and the Starbucks in the Best of the West Shopping Center located at 2192 N. Rainbow Blvd., Suite 100. The next gathering will take place on Aug. 6.
