June 17, 2010

There are several exiting events coming up in Ward 5 that I wanted to make all of you aware of!

I invite all of you to join me and my family for a free movie at the Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza at Lorenzi Park, located at 720 Twin Lakes Drive. The movie, "Monsters vs. Aliens," rated PG, will be shown on Thursday, June 24. Gates open at 7 p.m. and the movie starts at dusk.

This is the last movie in a series that I have offered this summer, and they have been extremely successful! This last movie is a great opportunity for everyone in the community to come out and take part.

Free popcorn will be provided while supplies last. Vendors will also offer a variety of treats for purchase. These Movies In The Park events are sponsored by Max Pawn, the Community Development Programs Center of Nevada and Timbers Bar & Grill.

Basketball Boot Camp

Youth ages 10 to 16 are invited to register for a basketball boot camp that will be hosted by me and former NBA veteran player Jerome "Junkyard Dog" Williams July 12-14 at the Doolittle Community Center. The focus will be on basketball skills and fundamentals, with additional instruction by college and area high school coaches on fitness, health and life skills. The cost is $49 for morning sessions and $79 for both sessions. Program hours will be 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Born in Washington, D.C., Jerome attended Georgetown University. He played for the Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks during his nine years of professional basketball. He retired from the NBA in 2005, and spent a week in South Africa that year participating in the Basketball Without Borders program. He became a youth ambassador for the program and an NBA FIT Team member, a role model to promote fitness and health. Williams has continued to be involved in community efforts to keep youth in school and to open future opportunities for them through basketball.

I am thrilled to have someone of Jerome Williams' caliber joining with me to host this exciting basketball boot camp. We will not only teach youth the fundamentals of the game, but also skills necessary to be successful in life.

The Doolittle center is located at 1950 N. J St., near the corner of Lake Mead Boulevard. For more information or to register for the camp, call (702) 589-4658 or e-mail to info@basketballbootcamp.net. Registration forms are available online.

New Retail Store At Edmond Town Center

I am also excited to tell you about the opening of California-based dd's DISCOUNTS with celebrations on June 26. Two new stores will open here locally on June 26, including one at Edmond Town Center, located at 931 West Owens Ave., and another at 4730 East Flamingo. As part of the grand opening ceremonies and in support of both communities, each of the two new dd's DISCOUNTS stores will donate $1,000 to the local Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Vegas and Henderson.

Additionally, each store will give away $1,000 in dd's gift cards. Customers may enter from June 26 through July 4 for a chance to win one of five $100 or one of ten $50 dd's DISCOUNTS Gift Cards. See stores for details.

dd's DISCOUNTS features values on a wide assortment of current fashions, typically featured in moderate department and national discount stores, but at savings of 20 to 70 percent. Merchandise includes name brand apparel, accessories and footwear for the entire family, as well as home decor.
