I want to invite you to participate in two exciting events coming up. The first one is the second annual Las Vegas Westside Alumni Reunion and picnic in Lorenzi Park this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. At this event, we are kicking off a historical collection drive to try to preserve the Historic Westside School's rich history with oral histories and a collection of school memorabilia.
I encourage you to search boxes in the attic, scrapbooks, and bureau drawers for historic photos, report cards or other items, to bring to the historical collection kickoff event at the Nevada State Museum in Lorenzi Park on Saturday, Sept. 25, between 1 and 4 p.m., so they may be scanned and returned to you. We are looking to the community to provide historic images to assist our architects with a rehabilitation project for the Westside Grammar School that will make us all proud. Lorenzi Park is located at 3333 W. Washington Ave.
The Historic Westside School, originally named the Las Vegas Grammar School Branch No. 1, was built in 1923 and is located at 330 W. Washington Ave. The building was the first grammar school in West Las Vegas. During the 1940s, the school expanded to accommodate a growing population and was important in the development of the Historic Westside. Today, the building is home to KCEP radio, serves as a community center and provides offices for the Economic Opportunity Board.
Earlier this year, the school was awarded a plaque from the National Register of Historic Places commemorating it as a historical building. In addition, the city of Las Vegas was recently awarded $550,000 from the Las Vegas Centennial Commission for structural, mechanical and electrical surveys of the school site, and for development of a restoration and program plan for the school.

City Of Las Vegas To Hold Supplier Outreach Workshop Oct. 5
The second event is a business opportunity for those who would like to become suppliers of goods and services to the city of Las Vegas. The city will hold a Supplier Outreach Workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Historic Fifth Street School, located at 401 S. Fourth St.
This event will include opportunities in the morning for local suppliers to attend a series of "table topics" workshops, which will address subjects such as understanding Nevada purchasing law, becoming certified as a minority-, woman- or disabled veteran-owned business, competitive bidding exceptions, insurance compliance, city sustainability initiatives, and more.
In the afternoon, attendees can meet with staff members who purchase products and services for the city. Staff from the city's Purchasing and Contracts Division also will be available to discuss the city's needs and upcoming procurements with potential suppliers. Category listings will be available at each table, so attendees can speak to the correct staff members.
The workshop will assist suppliers with supplier registration, understanding public purchasing statutes, the bidding process and the professional services contracting process for architects and engineers.
