3rd Annual Education Forum Oct. 13

The community is invited to join me and members of the Clark County School District management team and Board of Trustees, Nevada Legislative Education Committee and Nevada Board of Education for the 3rd Annual Education Forum on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers at 400 Stewart Ave. Sponsored by the Clark County Black Caucus and moderated by KCEP radio personality Patricia Cunningham, the discussion will include school performance and standards, parent/student empowerment, school choice, magnet schools and GATE progress, PSAT/AP information, 2011 legislative education bill drafts, and goals for the 2010-11 school year. The community is encouraged to ask questions during this discussion. In addition, a brief presentation on multicultural education will be made by the National Association for Multicultural Education.

This forum offers the community and the CCSD an opportunity to have a conversation about the educational needs in our community, with a focus on the unique needs of underachieving schools and the educational opportunities for higher learning and achievement for African-American children. Call my office for more information at 229-5443.

Sing & Shout with Shots 4 Tots Oct. 16

Bring your infants and toddlers for free immunization shots on Saturday, Oct. 16, to the Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza in Lorenzi Park, and have an afternoon of family fun. You are invited to enjoy free hot dogs and funnel cakes (while supplies last) and drawings for Walmart gift cards and a Halloween gift basket. We'll be entertained by DJ Baby Chino and the winners of the Shots 4 Tots Talent Search. It all takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. at 720 Twin Lakes Drive, just south of West Washington Avenue. Be sure to bring shot records for the children.

The event is presented by 100 Black Men of Las Vegas and me, and sponsored by the Southern Nevada Health District, United Way of Southern Nevada and the city of Las Vegas. For more information, call 562-6397.
