I wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday season!
RTC Continues Tradition of Free Service New Year's Eve & Jan. 1
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC), in keeping with its annual tradition, will again operate transit routes free of charge from 6 p.m. New Year's Eve until 9 a.m. New Year's Day. Free rides apply to all RTC transit routes throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
The RTC will operate its transit system on holiday schedules on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. On Dec. 24, transit routes will operate on a Saturday schedule. Routes will operate on a Sunday schedule on Dec. 25 and on Jan. 1. Transit service will operate on a normal schedule on Dec. 31; however, some routes are expected to be detoured due to the New Year's Eve festivities and the closure of the Las Vegas Strip to vehicular traffic at 6:30 p.m. Detour information and holiday schedules for all RTC transit routes are available online or in the RTC's Transit Guide. Riders with questions also can call the RTC's Customer Service line at 702.228.RIDE (7433).

City Administrative Functions Will Close Dec. 24-Jan. 2
As a cost-cutting measure, city of Las Vegas administrative functions will be closed from Friday, Dec. 24, to Sunday, Jan. 2, reopening on Monday, Jan. 3. This closure includes the holidays of Christmas and New Year's Day, recognized on Dec. 24, and Dec. 31 respectively, and the days of Dec. 27-30 as furlough days.
Essential public safety functions such as fire and rescue, city marshals, including animal control, parking enforcement and the jail, and sewage plant operations will continue as normal. City staff also will be available to deal with other issues that may affect the community including:
• Code enforcement, including graffiti removal and other neighborhood complaints;
• Municipal Court front counters and previously scheduled court-ordered program classes;
• Traffic safety / maintenance;
• Three winter break camps at Cimarron Rose, Mirabelli and East Las Vegas community centers;
• Standard building inspections (no express or special inspections); and
• Urgent matters in the Office of Business Development.
Citizens are encouraged to visit the city website home page for a list of the many online services that are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition, a phone bank staffed with city employees will be available Dec. 27-30. Most calls to city departments will be routed to this phone bank, where callers will be assisted.
You Are Invited for Coffee, Tea and Conversation Jan. 6
Please join me for coffee, tea and conversation about the community from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6, at the Starbucks at 751 N. Rancho Drive. Residents will have the opportunity to speak directly with me on issues of concern.
Town Hall Meeting Jan. 18
The city of Las Vegas will hold a series of town hall meetings in January as part of the "Your City, Your Way" effort. Town hall meetings will be held in various locations throughout the city with council representatives from respective wards attending. During the Ward 5 meeting, Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 5:30 p.m. at the Doolittle Community Center located at 1950 N. J St., you will hear from me and other city officials. You also will hear a presentation from City Manager Elizabeth N. Fretwell on topics that include city finances, redevelopment and the results of a city "report card" on progress with the city's top priorities. Participants also will have the opportunity to be part of small-group discussions aimed at improving the city.
The Your City, Your Way effort started about a year ago as the city sought input on the best ways to balance its sagging budget. The meetings next year are a follow-up to that initial program.
