Citizens of the Month
On Wednesday, Feb. 2, the City Council will recognize the employees of Catholic Charities as the February Citizens of the Month. The meeting takes place at 9 a.m. in City Hall council chambers, located at 400 Stewart Ave. Catholic Charities has been assisting Las Vegans in need for 70 years and offers 24 diverse programs for children, seniors and families regardless of race, religion or creed.
New Downtown Services Center Open
There are several new services available to businesses and residents of Ward 5, all under one roof! The newly remodeled Development Service Center located at 333 N. Rancho Drive opened its doors last month, making it easier for customers to do business with the city of Las Vegas. The Planning and Development Department, Building and Safety Department, Fire Prevention, and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department are open for business at the new Development Services Center. Regular hours of operation will be 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The city engineer, Public Works and Field Operations administrations, and Business Licensing are scheduled to move into the facility over the coming weeks. These departments will remain at this location once the new City Hall opens next year, so residents and businesses can get their needs met in one location.
The new Development Services Center was designed to be a “one-stop shop” for the development community. The city has been working for more than a year to restructure the development review process to more effectively meet the needs of our customers. The development review process includes the steps one must go through to obtain permits and other documents needed during the building and planning process. The city hired outside consultants, Kirchhoff & Associates, to conduct an analysis of the existing development review process. The new Development Services Center mirrors a recommendation made by the consultants by consolidating all development processes to a single location, which is expected to help make Las Vegas the “destination of choice” for the development community. The city hopes these changes will stimulate business during this sagging economy.

Walkable Communities allow residents to socialize and to access community amenities needed to conduct daily activities within a 10-minute walking distance. Based on a study of neighborhoods with the greatest potential to become self-sustained walkable communities and direction from the city’s 2020 Master Plan, neighborhoods were identified with the goal of recommending improvements that allow residents to easily walk to community assets. The improvements seek to offset an over-reliance on automotive-based travel within the public realm (public right-of–way) by providing alternative modes of transportation such as walking, bicycling and mass transit.
Other Community Events
The Artisan Hotel Boutique, located at 1501 W. Sahara Ave. (Interstate 15 and Sahara), is providing special Happy Hour prices on drinks and appetizers for Clark County School District ID card holders on Fridays from 4 to 8 p.m. beginning Feb. 11. With every individual purchase of drink and appetizer you will receive a ticket to be entered into a monthly raffle for prizes donated by participating sponsors. Prizes include but are not limited to a room from the Artisan, nail salon treatments, edible arrangements, personal training sessions and many others.
