Neighborhood Meeting Dec. 8
For many of you that like to be involved with the growth of Ward 5, I encourage you to attend a voluntary neighborhood meeting scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 8, at 6 p.m., to be held in Room A of the West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd.  There will be discussion about a project that is proposed on a vacant lot that fronts Martin Luther King Boulevard between Owens and Washington.  There has been little interest in developing this lot because of its narrow and awkward size, but now there is an interest to build a new carwash.  Please come to the meeting to voice your opinions about this new development.

There is another neighborhood meeting that I would like to invite you to attend.  For many of you that like to be involved with the growth of Ward 5, I encourage you to attend a voluntary neighborhood meeting scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 15, at 5:30 p.m. at 1722 W. Bonanza Road, Suite 100.  There will be information about a new business that is proposed near the corner of Bonanza Road and Rancho Drive.  This home was previously converted to a business more than 10 years ago, but now there is a new business proposed that offers educational classes and legal assistance to immigrants.

Community Invited To Celebrate Kwanzaa And Rites Of Passage Graduates Dec. 22
Free Program To Feature Jester Hairston Singers

Everyone is invited to celebrate Kwanzaa and the accomplishments of the Rites of Passage graduates at the West Las Vegas Library Theatre on Thursday, Dec. 22, beginning at 7 p.m. The Jester Hairston Singers will perform. Admission is free. The theatre is located at 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd.

The program will include a workshop led by Keith Brantley that dispels the myths and explains the spirit and principles of Kwanzaa, as well as graduation ceremonies for participants of the "S.I.S.T.A." girls and "UMOJA" boys Rites of Passage mentoring workshops. The Rites of Passage program is designed to provide the necessary tools to empower, develop, enlighten and assist young girls and boys in becoming caring adults and independent thinkers as they mature into adulthood. Girls and boys, ages 10 through 16, travel a 10-week journey toward the path of adulthood. 

The event is sponsored by the city of Las Vegas West Las Vegas Arts Center and the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, West Las Vegas Library. For more information, call 229-4800 or go online.

Volunteers, Vendors & Car Enthusiasts Invited to Participate in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Fest Jan. 16
Entry Applications Due By Dec. 21

I invite the community to join me at the first annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Fest on Monday, Jan. 16, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Edmond Town Center, located at H Street and Owens Avenue.

The event is a free community celebration that will include food and cultural vendors, car, truck and motorcycle shows, a chili cook-off and entertainment and activities for the entire family. 

Vendors, car owners and chili chefs interested in participating in the event should visit the Dream Fest Web page to print out an application form. The Web page also has details on where the form can be mailed and how to pay any associated fees. Forms and payments must be turned in to the address listed on the applications by Dec. 21, 2011.

I am also looking for volunteers to help with the event, including set up and break down.  I encourage everyone interested in volunteering can contact my office at 229-5443.
