NEW PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
I will turn on flashing lights for the recently installed crosswalk for pedestrians crossing Jones Boulevard at Heather Mist Lane, just south of Cheyenne Avenue, at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21. I encourage you to join me for the opening and also to be mindful of this new addition to the roadway. For more information on this or other Ward 5 events, call my office at 229-5443 or go to my Web page.

FREE YOUTH CONFERENCE APRIL 28

I will welcome participants to the free "4th Annual Youth Conference: A Call to Healing" at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 28, at the West Las Vegas Arts Center. We are bringing our community youth together to work with them on important issues, including gang violence, bullying, education, life choices, relationships and self-respect. I encourage all our young men and women ages 10-18 to attend this life-changing, empowering conference. See all the details here or call 229-4800 to register and receive more information.

COMMUNITY GARDENS

At Tuesday's Recommending Committee meeting, the committee approved a bill I am proposing that would allow community gardens in certain residential, commercial and industrial zoning districts throughout the city. This bill was sparked by the very successful Tonopah Community Garden, and the fact that others are interested in establishing community gardens in their neighborhoods, as well. This bill promotes healthy neighborhoods and helps to provide food security for low-income individuals. The bill would allow weekly sales of goods from the garden. The bill was passed by the Recommending Committee and will go before the full City Council for consideration May 2.

COFFEE WITH THE COUNCILMAN MAY 3

Join me for coffee and conversation on Thursday, May 3, from 9 to 10 a.m. at Starbucks, located at 751 N. Rancho Drive at Bonanza Road. Let's discuss our vision for Ward 5 and what we can do together to achieve those goals. This is a great way to talk with me about exciting events I am planning for the remainder of the year! There are so many ways to be involved with our community, so join me for a cup of coffee or tea — on me!

MAY IS BUILDING SAFETY MONTH

May is Building Safety Month. In honor of Building Safety month, the city of Las Vegas Department of Building & Safety is offering a permit amnesty program. This program is designed to assist homeowners in obtaining the proper permits for their homes. Did you know you need a permit to do a garage conversion, add an addition, or install a water heater or water softener?  During the month of May, homeowners who have done work in their homes without a permit will be able to pull the proper permits without incurring any additional penalties or double fees. More information, forms and resources related to permits, inspections and building codes are available online

WELLS FARGO NEIGHBORHOODLIFT PROGRAM

Residents are invited to attend the NeighborhoodLIFT program May 4 and 5, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Riviera Hotel & Casino Royale Pavilion, where they can apply for Wells Fargo-funded down payment assistance grants and homebuyer support programs. Admission and parking will be free. At the event, prospective homebuyers can participate in affordable home tours of residential properties for sale in the city of Las Vegas and will be able to apply for down payment assistance grants of up to $15,000 administered by NeighborWorks America affiliate Neighborhood Housing Services of Southern Nevada through grants from the Wells Fargo Foundation.

Representatives from Neighborhood Housing Services of Southern Nevada and the city of Las Vegas will be on site to help with the processing of applications for grants and other services. See the English-language flier or Spanish-language flier for more information. Prospective homebuyers can learn the program requirements, more details, see a list of what to bring, and register to attend the events here.
