On Monday, Aug. 13, I will help launch the new "Literacy Liftoff" intensive summer reading program for 48 pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students of the Ward 5 Matt Kelly Elementary School. The city is partnering with The Clark County Public Education Foundation and the Clark County School District to encourage literacy with this city-funded pilot program, setting the youngsters on a path toward high school graduation. See all the details in the news release.
City Council Meeting Aug. 15
The next City Council meeting is set for Wednesday, Aug. 15, starting at 9 a.m. in Council Chambers on the second floor at City Hall, located downtown at 495 S. Main St. I will recognize the efforts of an Olive Garden restaurant and the Las Vegas Hawks baseball team during the ceremonial portion of the meeting. The Olive Garden restaurant at U.S. 95 and Cheyenne Avenue works with Westview Services in Las Vegas to assist adults with disabilities in gaining skills to work in a normal competitive business environment. The Hawks recently traveled to Cooperstown, N.Y., the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, where they won a tournament.
There are several City Council agenda items that may be of interest to Ward 5 residents. See the agenda items list on my website. Please join me for the City Council meeting, if you have the opportunity!
