Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Ready for New Explorer Scout Recruits
The Explorer Program is currently accepting online applications for new members. Anyone interested in the program is encouraged to come to the Explorer Program First Timer’s meeting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department headquarters, 400 S. Martin Luther King Blvd., and find out more. Prior to attending the First Timer’s meeting, prospective applicants must first apply online.

Arts Connection Presents "Out of the Desert"
Saturday, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m.
Ansan Sister City Park, 7801 Ducharme Ave. at Villa Monterey.
Based in Las Vegas, "Out of the Desert" is a great bluegrass band formed in 2008. Much of that year was spent developing their special arrangements of traditional as well as more contemporary bluegrass music. The band is made up of John Lundmark (guitar and vocals), Mark Sanders (banjo and vocals), Rick Seligman (fiddle), Jon Meek (dobro, mandolin and harmony vocals), and Brian Burns (bass and harmony vocals). The concert is free and open to the public. Bring your blanket, picnic, and enjoy some great music.

Village Square Carnival for Make-A-Wish®
Sept. 23
9400 W. Sahara Ave.
Village Square Carnival to benefit Make-A-Wish® in collaboration with Cold Stone Creamery. This carnival-themed event will include interactive games, inflatables, jugglers and live music. Enjoy a specially crafted ice cream designed by a Wish child. Free samples to all carnival participants.

Vegas Valley Book Festival Pre-Festival Event
“Readings in the Pumpkin Patch” (all ages)
Saturday, Oct. 6, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Free for the first 300 cars; $3 per car for additional vehicles.
Gilcrease Orchard, 7800 Tenaya Way.
A celebration of books, readings and music in the community’s historic orchard, with kids’ bookmaking projects, local children’s authors, book signings, and more. For more information, call 229-5431.

Trunk or Treat Car Show
Saturday, Oct. 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Free and open to the public.  Car show registration is $25 in advance, $35 cash at the event.
Enjoy the fourth annual Trunk or Treat Car Show – wonderful cars decorated for Halloween, kids games, prizes, costume contests, food, fun, jump house and trick-or-treating with all the car owners. Summerlin Art Festival
Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13-14, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Free admission.
Summerlin Centre Community Park, 1800 S. Town Center Drive.
Valley residents are invited to attend the 18th annual Summerlin Art Festival, one of Las Vegas’ largest and most colorful outdoor art events. Nearly 100 artists and craftsman from throughout the southwestern United States will display their works. Collections include paintings, glasswork, pottery, jewelry, metal works, sculpture, mixed media and more. The event also features colorful chalk art masterpieces created using the park sidewalks as a canvas. More than 60 local aspiring artists will produce chalk art pieces as part of the traditional chalk art competition. Non-competing artists are welcome to add their creation to the sidewalk for a nominal fee of $5, which includes sidewalk space, a knee pad and chalk. Summerlin Art Festival also features a full entertainment line-up, including live music, dance performances, food art demonstrations, children’s activities and more.
