FIRST FRIDAY CELEBRATION AUG. 2

SAFE SUMMER NIGHTS CELEBRATION AUG. 6
Bring the family Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m., for a fun Safe Summer Night celebration at Matt Kelly Elementary School, located at 1900 N. J St. Enjoy music, children’s games, face painting, and free hot dogs, chips and water while supplies last. City of Las Vegas staff will be joined by local non-profit representatives, neighbors and others to provide information about summer youth activities, health services, community safety, adult education opportunities and more. CITY COUNCIL MEETING AUG. 7
The Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency will meet at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, in Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, located at 495 S. Main St., followed immediately by the City Council meeting. Agenda items of particular interest to Ward 5 residents can be found here. The complete agenda is available here. WARD 5 BACK-TO-SCHOOL FAIR AUG. 17
Join me Saturday, Aug. 17, for a back-to-school fair that begins in Lorenzi Park at 8 a.m. at Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza, located at 720 Twin Lakes Drive. Those interested in free supplies and backpacks at the back-to-school fair should arrive by 7:30 a.m. to get a wristband, while supplies last. Participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to a local food pantry charity. Free immunization shots for children with shot records will be offered 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza. See the flier.

LORENZI PARK REOPENING CELEBRATION AUG. 17
Join me on Saturday, Aug. 17, at 11 a.m. in the rose garden as we officially reopen the west side of Lorenzi Park to the public. The park is located at 3333 W. Washington Ave. at Twin Lakes Drive. A $30 million renovation has been completed at the 60-acre regional park. New amenities include a new splash pad, children’s play areas, picnic and shade structures, historic markers, as well as the return of the historic twin lakes and band shell. We will dedicate the renovated park at 11 a.m. with a flag ceremony at the gazebo in the rose garden at the northwest corner of the park. There also will be games, face-painting, music and food vendors at the park until 1 p.m.  See the flier and news release for details.

SENIOR ENERGY ASSISTANCE EXPO AUG. 3
NV Energy will host its annual Senior Energy Assistance Expo Saturday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cashman Center. The event is expected to draw more than 3,000 seniors to Cashman Center, located at 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North, Hall A. At the event, nonprofit and government agencies will be available to help seniors pay past due bills, discuss weatherization options for their home, and provide energy education, conservation and rebate information. See the flier for details. Click here for parking coupon.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL IMMUNIZATIONS
The Southern Nevada Health District provides back-to-school immunizations at its public health centers year round. Summer is an excellent time to bring in pre-schoolers, kindergartners, and seventh graders for their mandatory vaccinations. SOUTHERN NEVADA STRONG SURVEY
Southern Nevada Strong – a regional planning initiative to better integrate transportation, housing, and job opportunities throughout Southern Nevada – invites local residents to attend an open house in their area this summer. This project is a one-time planning effort focusing on improving the region’s economic resilience and competitiveness and relies heavily on public input and participation. Open houses will include:

  • Brief presentation on Southern Nevada Strong at the top of each hour;
  • Residents will have the opportunity to review priorities for the Regional Plan and rank areas throughout the Valley that they feel are best positioned to better connect transportation, housing and job opportunities through iPad surveys; 
  • Photo preference survey of land use and development choices; and
  • Activities for kids and more.
