RECYCLE YOUR HOLIDAY TREE
Recycling your live holiday tree is a gift that will keep on giving back to the community.  Donated cut trees are chipped into mulch that is used in public gardens and parks across the valley to help conserve soil moisture and keep plants healthy.
 
The process is very simple. There are no fees; just a wee bit of your time is all that is required. Take your holiday tree to one of more than 22 convenient drop sites by Jan. 15. Before dropping off your tree, remove all non-organic objects, such as lights, wire, tinsel, ornaments and nails. Foreign objects contaminate the mulch and damage the chipper. Flocked trees cannot be recycled. See the drop sites online.

The community has been recycling trees in southern Nevada for more than 10 years, and each year the number of participants increases. Last year, southern Nevada residents recycled 15,000 trees. Yet, as impressive as that is, that’s a small percentage of the 250,000 trees sold in the community. Last year, more than 235,000 trees went to the landfill. Make a difference this year and recycle your cut holiday tree! GRANDMA’S CEDAR CHEST BLANKET DRIVE
Las Vegas is called home by many who moved here from much colder climates. They consider our weather in December to be relatively mild. But for those with no walls to protect them, exposed to the elements, December is cold and can be windy and icy. Members of the Veterans Memorial Leisure Service Center’s Youth Council sponsored a blanket drive Nov. 18-Dec. 13 to render aid. Entitled “Grandma’s Cedar Chest,” they collected many new and gently used blankets, quilts and handmade afghans. The gathered goods were then delivered to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission Dec. 17. Staff at the mission were happy to accept the donation and offered a heartfelt thank you to these thoughtful young people, demonstrating the spirit of the holidays. 

CRIME STATISTICS
We get calls regularly about crime statistics that are provided by Nextdoor and AlertID, which are two such informational sites. Social media sites such as these are becoming more common. Certainly people can utilize these sites however they see most beneficial to them. But, for crime statistics, we encourage citizens to view the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) website at www.lvmpd.com and choose the “Protect Yourself” tab and then the “Crime Mapping” option. 

The police department does not monitor the chatter on Nextdoor, AlertID, or any other social media site. So, anyone using these should do so understanding that if they have a crime to report, or witness information to provide, or questions regarding police activity or assistance, they need to contact LVMPD directly. Posting something on these sites does not come to police attention, nor do they have the time or ability to monitor the chatter that goes back and forth.

2014 Indoor Boot Camp with Judy Paris
Saturdays, Jan. 11 & 25, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.
Free and open to the public.
Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave., Multipurpose Room.
Come to the Sahara West Library’s indoor boot camp class taught by certified personal trainer Judy Paris of J & D Fitness Group. Get ready to be motivated, inspired, and conditioned! This boot camp class will include cardio, stretching, strengthening (exercises such as push-ups, squats, lunges, etc.), and core work and balancing. Camp will meet two Saturdays each month: Jan. 11, 25; Feb. 8, 22; March 8, 22; April 12, 26; May 10, 24; June 14, 28; July 12, 26; Aug. 9, 23; Sept. 6, 27; Oct. 11, 25; and Nov. 8, 22.

Paris specializes in body mechanics, alignment, and core training. She uses her educational background (Oklahoma State University), continued education certifications, and over 25 years of experience to design programs that allow her clients to enjoy reaching their fitness goals safely and effectively. Paris carries certifications from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), American Council of Exercise (ACE) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). She holds the title of “Master Trainer” with the International Dance and Exercise Association (IDEA).
 
Bring your own yoga mat, towel, and bottle of water, and make sure you are hydrated prior to class. As with any new exercise program, it is advisable to consult with your doctor before taking these boot camp classes.
