Mayor Goodman Provides Vision For The New Year

Mayor Oscar B. Goodman recently presented his annual State of the City address in downtown Las Vegas.

During the mayor's speech, he reflected on the city's Centennial celebration, which concluded on December 31, 2005. The last 12 months were marked by thousands of celebrations, including the world’s largest birthday cake, fireworks, the Helldorado Days Parade, entertainment and theater. To commemorate the Centennial for future generations, the members of the Centennial committee dedicated a time capsule containing items reflecting the year-long celebration.

The mayor also mentioned the city's many accomplishments, including Las Vegas playing host to the NBA All-Star game in 2007 and Major League Baseball's winter meetings being held here in 2008.

The mayor also announced that a "think tank" of leading experts in degenerative brain diseases, like Alzheimer and Parkinson's, would be meeting in Las Vegas later this year to work on cures for those diseases. The mayor also said that plans are moving forward for the development of an academic medical center, and that local doctors and the academic community are working together toward that goal.

In addition to the many high-rise towers being built downtown, the mayor announced that the developer of Streamline Tower had taken out $990,000 in permits on Monday, January 9, to build the project.
