Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, there are a number of events taking place in the community. The annual parade is from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, January 14, along Fourth Street in the downtown area.
In addition to the parade, the Cultural Affairs Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services, with co-sponsorship by the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District , Clark County and the Frederick Douglass Educational Foundation, will present a series of programs commemorating and celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The programs will be held on Sunday, January 15. The keynote speaker and workshop facilitator is Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu. A youth development workshop for boys and girls ages 10 to 18 will be held from 2 to 2:45 p.m. at the West Las Vegas Library Theatre, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd. From 4 to 5 p.m., a workshop for young men followed by a reception from 6 to 7 p.m. will be held at the West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd. The day culminates with a cultural tribute to Dr. King at the West Las Vegas Library Theatre from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Peace Fest 2006, which also commemorates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will take place on Monday, January 16, at the Clark County Community Resource Center, located at 2432 N. Martin L. King Boulevard at Carey Avenue. The free event is from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It will be immediately followed by a candlelight vigil around the statue of King, which will conclude at about 4:30 p.m.
The celebration is sponsored by Clark County, the city of Las Vegas, the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District and KCEP Power 88.1 radio. There will be about 15 to 20 vendors, entertainment and activities for the entire family. African dance ensembles, “praise dancers,” spoken word and more will be showcased from noon until 3:15 p.m.
The candlelight vigil will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the Negro National Anthem, a rendition of one of King's speeches, singing and the candle-lighting ceremony, followed by a moment of silence and a short parting prayer.
Admission is free, but vendors will have merchandise and food for sale.

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Peace Week (January 15 to 21) and Black History Month (February), the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services has scheduled many special events for all Las Vegas area residents to enjoy.
