Earth Day

The city of Las Vegas will recognize Earth Day in the days leading up to the official celebration. On Wednesday, April 19, beginning at 9 a.m. in the plaza at City Hall, located at 400 Stewart Avenue, one of the city’s Honda FCX hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and an aluminum jet boat will be on display.
The Hondas are among the first of their kind in the world. By being the first city in Nevada to test these vehicles and by building the world’s first hydrogen energy station, we are at the forefront in pursuing innovative technology to help keep our environment clean. The only exhaust from a hydrogen vehicle is a small amount of water.
Also on display will be a 28-foot Almar aluminum jet boat used by the city to conduct water quality sampling at various locations on Lake Mead. The Public Works Department’s Environmental Division personnel are responsible for treating wastewater from the city’s three facilities and returning it safely to the environment.
Environmental Division staff, in conjunction with Southern Nevada’s other discharging agencies, collectively monitor the water quality of Lake Mead to ensure that the discharge does not adversely impact downstream users.
Saturday, April 22, marks the 37th anniversary of the Earth Day celebration and there are several events being planned locally to mark the occasion. On Saturday, April 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., residents are invited to attend Earthfaire, Summerlin’s third annual Earth Day Festival. The event will take place at Summerlin Centre Community Park, located at 1800 Town Center Drive (between Charleston Boulevard and Sahara Avenue). Earthfaire features nearly 50 organizations, including the city of Las Vegas, which will offer interactive displays and exhibits. There will also be children’s activities that show fun, simple ways to conserve that can make a big impact on our planet.
