Opening Of New City Pool Signals Start Of Swim Season

A new pool at Freedom Park will open just in time for swim season. The Carlos L. Martinez and Darrio J. Hall Pool will officially open during Memorial Day weekend with a family celebration planned from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 27. The event is free for the entire family.

The city broke ground on the $4.7 million pool last June. The pool will be a new addition to Freedom Park, one of the older and most popular parks in the city. This new amenity will only add to the popularity of the park, which is located at 889 North Pecos Road at East Washington Avenue.

The new pool includes two diving boards, a waterslide, men’s and women’s restrooms and showers, a reception area  and two storage areas.

The opening of the new pool will coincide with the start of swim season. Several seasonal pools will soon reopen to offer the community open swim time, classes and activities. Classes include diving, lifeguard readiness, synchronized swim team, water polo, junior lifeguard camp, water safety and swim lessons. A number of family events are also planned for the summer including “Dear Ol’Dad’s Day,” on Sunday June 18, where fathers will be admitted free when accompanied by their child.

Fees for activities and classes vary and summer passes are available for open swim times.
