City Bringing Back Helldorado Days Tradition
Parade Entry Forms Due By March 24

In keeping with the tradition that was laid out during last year’s Centennial Celebration, the city of Las Vegas is once again bringing back Helldorado Days, the oldest and most revered community event that began in 1935 and celebrated our town's Western roots.

This year’s schedule of events will begin on April 24, 2006, and run through the entire month of May. The events and parade are being sponsored by the city of Las Vegas and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1468.

The 2006 Helldorado Days will include a wide variety of events for people of all ages. A golf tournament, kick-off dinner, art show and art auction, trail ride, poker tournament, trap shooting tournament and 10 days of horse-related events are being sponsored by the local Elks club. The annual parade, sponsored by the city of Las Vegas, will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, along Fourth Street in the downtown area.

"Helldorado Days is the glue holding our past with our present,” said Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman. “It is a most important event to celebrate our being Las Vegans and showing our love for each other and to our city."

What began as a tool in 1935 to bring tourists to town following the completion of construction on Hoover Dam evolved into a celebrated event that united locals with community spirit and raised money for local charities. In its heyday, Helldorado was centered on Western themed events such as the Kangaroo Court, Old Timers Parade, Rodeo, Whiskerino Contest, Beauty Parade and Children's Parade and it remained the biggest community event each year throughout the mid-1960s.

In 2005, after seven years of absence, the time-honored Helldorado Days tradition was resurrected in celebration of the city’s Centennial. Based on its success last year, organizers vowed to keep up the tradition.

Those interested in entering a float or participating in the parade can download a registration form on the city’s Web site at www.lasvegasnevada.gov. Forms must be received by the city no later than Friday, April 14, 2006, in order to be eligible to be entered into the parade. For more information on the parade please contact Esther Carter at (702) 229-6776.
