Green Council The Green Council is a working group consisting of developers, engineers, educators, public health officials, architects and various organizations formed by the city of Las Vegas to help advance the city’s Sustainability Initiative by recommending measures from the land use and green building sections of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Blueprint for Nevada Since its creation in 2008, the Green Council has been instrumental in advising city staff and the city Manager on recommendations for updating the Green Building Program. Between September 2008 and April 2009, the Green Council, supported by the departments of Planning and Development, Building and Safety and Human Resources, analyzed the current Green Building Program, identified green building goals, and developed ideas for minimum standards and incentives using various group and team activities to spur critical thinking and collaborative problem solving. Overall, the group felt that the program is a good first step to establishing a comprehensive Green Building Program and felt that it demonstrates the city’s commitment to sustainability. They also recommended improving the program by including meaningful incentives, adding a commercial component, emphasizing job creation, expanding the program to include existing buildings, using a higher LEED standard, and expanding the public education and outreach component. The Green Council will now be looking at other aspects of the Blueprint, in addition to helping implement the city’s Sustainable Energy Strategy The membership of the Green Council includes representation from:
