Sustaining Las Vegas
|
-
For the city of Las Vegas, Sustainability is more than just being “green” — it is a way to ensure that current and future generations will enjoy the quality of life we have all worked so hard to achieve. It includes every aspect of our lives and it takes the whole community to make it work. Learn more about the following topics:
-
The city has partnered with the Nevada State Office of Energy to make it easier to install a solar photovoltaic system on the roof of your home or business. As a part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative, the city has worked with a statewide consortium to develop SolarFit Nevada, a program that streamlines the process of permitting and connecting solar. To begin the expedited process, submit an online application or visit http://www.solarfitnevada.com.
-
The city’s Neighborhood Stabilization program has partnered with Building America Retrofit Initiative, Home Performance with Energy Star and EnergyFit Nevada to upgrade two residential homes to a higher energy efficiency standard. The home at 7224 Carmen Blvd. will be open through May 2012. For further information, visit the HomeFree Nevada website.

The city dedicated its new City Hall in March 2012. This projected LEED certified Gold building features 33 solar trees and solar panels on the roof, which generate 290,000 kWh of electricity annually. This is equivalent to reducing the city’s carbon footprint by 2,400 metric tons in greenhouse gases with a dollar savings of $400,000 per year. The building also has electric vehicle charging stations, state-of- the-art design and a green roof with courtyard.
-
The city has several new electric vehicles in addition to its hybrid Toyota Priuses and Ford Escapes. Its newest addition is the Chevy Volt, which is an extended range electric vehicle, and a Nissan Leaf. The Volt drives around 30 miles all electric and switches to gasoline when the battery is drained. The Leaf is an all electric car and can drive up to 90 miles before a charge.

Sustainable Energy Strategy 2013
In 2008, the Sustainable Energy Strategy was adopted by the City Council. Since then, the city has added 32,000 energy efficient LED streetlights, five megawatts of renewable energy at city facilities (including three megawatts at the City’s wastewater treatment plant), constructed seven buildings to LEED and green standards, and has implemented single-stream recycling at city parks and facilities. These measures have saved the city more than $9 million since 2010. In 2013, the city will be adding another 100 kW of solar, 10,000 additional LED streetlights, energy efficiency upgrades at city facilities, bring recycling rates to more than 50 percent at city facilities and begin reducing water consumption at city parks. City Solar Installations
In 2008, the city adopted a Sustainable Energy Strategy resolution that established the goal of installing three megawatts of renewable energy by 2011 and seven megawatts by 2015. The city, in collaboration with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has developed a Sustainable Energy Portal that displays real-time energy production from the city’s solar systems installed at 27 of its facilities throughout the Las Vegas Valley. For more information, a map, and to see how much energy is being produced at nearly five megawatts of projects, visit: http://solar.environment.unlv.edu/
