Gary Ameling joined the city of Las Vegas as chief financial officer (CFO) in February 2017. He oversees the Finance, Human Resources, and Information Technologies departments as well as the City Clerk’s Office.
Prior to joining Las Vegas, Ameling served the cities of Bellevue, Wash.; La Mesa, Calif.; and Santa Clara, Calif. for over 27 years in increasingly responsible municipal finance positions including the last 16 years as a department head. While in Santa Clara, he served as director of finance overseeing an annual budget of over $750 million and was part of a team that successfully negotiated agreements that brought the San Francisco 49ers to Levi’s Stadium. He was with Santa Clara for seven years where he played a key role in eliminating their structural deficit. For three of his years in Santa Clara, he also served as an assistant city manager.
Ameling has been acknowledged by the Silicon Valley Business Journal as government/public sector CFO of the year for 2015. He has held leadership positions in or been an active member of various municipal finance organizations including the League of California Cities Fiscal Officers Department, California Society of Municipal Finance Officers, Government Finance Officers Association, and others. Ameling has Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees from Northern Arizona University.
