Department History

1914

The city of Las Vegas Marshal, policeman, special patrolman or watchman was given the authority to impound running at large dogs within the city of Las Vegas.

1981

City Planning Commission Action approved creation of the city of Las Vegas Department of Detention and Correctional Services.

1982

City of Las Vegas Department of Detention and Correctional Services begins operations. The City Council approves the concept of starting the city of Las Vegas Park Ranger Unit.

1985

The department assumed control of the City Hall Jail. The jail served as the intake unit where inmates were booked, processed and housed until they were transferred to the detention center.

1986

The Park Ranger Unit was transferred to the city of Las Vegas Department of Detention and Corrections.

1988

The department evolved into the city of Las Vegas Department of Detention and Enforcement, and takes charge of Animal Control-related issues in the city.

1992

The Park Ranger Unit is changed to the Deputy City Marshal Unit.

1997

Expansion project replaced old barracks at the city of Las Vegas Detention Center.

2009

The city of Las Vegas Animal Control Unit was recognized by the National Animal Control Association as the Animal Control Department of the Year.

The department continues to grow adding specialized teams of officers to assist those experiencing homelessness and to provide additional security in the tourist corridor at the Fremont Street Experience.
