The city of Las Vegas is working to create a co-op grocery store located in the Historic Westside in Ward 5. The store is being planned to provide affordable, healthy and culturally-relevant food options to the community, while also creating a hub for community engagement, education and outreach. The project will bring new job opportunities for local residents, and build a sustainable and equitable food system that meets the needs of the community.
A co-op grocery store puts community and sustainability first. Here, you're not just a customer - you're a member and co-owner, with a say in how the store is run and a share in the profits. Co-op grocery stores provide fresh, healthy and locally-sourced food options, all while fostering community engagement and supporting local economic development. Co-ops are typically run democratically, with each member having an equal say in how the business is run. Members elect a board of directors to oversee day-to-day operations. Co-ops often prioritize social and environmental values over profits.
Access to affordable and nutritious food is currently limited on the Historic Westside. Eden, planned to be located in James Gay Park, located near B Street and Harrison Avenue, will help to fill this void and allow the community to have a say in the products and services offered. Currently the city plans to potentially collocate the co-op with a greenhouse and may also include housing as part of the reimagined James Gay Park project.
The city has started outreach efforts in the community to build community support. If you are interested in being a part of Eden, or have questions please reach out to TeeAzha Akin with the city’s Neighborhood Services Department at 702-323-9487 or email westsidecoop@lasvegasnevada.gov.
