A Sustainable Future in the Desert

Providing a sustainable future for Las Vegas.

Our work to provide a sustainable future for all continues.

Powered by renewable energy

We are proud to be the first large city to run on 100 percent renewable energy.

We also generate solar power at 40 different parks, community centers and facilities across the city. We also receive hydropower from Hoover Dam for our wastewater treatment operations.

Our new municipal courthouse, Fire Stations 3 and 108 will be going solar later this year.

Covered solar parking will soon be a reality at Freedom Park. It will soon be host to the first community solar system in Nevada for qualifying NV Energy customers.

Conserving Water

We are doing our part to conserve water and have reduced water consumption at our facilities by 2.25 billion gallons over the last decade.

We have also removed non-functional turf at parks, incorporated xeriscaping and replaced sports fields with artificial turf.

100 million gallons of water saved annually thanks to our median art. Using art to beautify our medians instead of grass and flowers is a great way for us to be water smart in the desert.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

In coordination with NV Energy, we will be installing even more electric vehicle charging stations at city facilities for public use. City Hall also has free charging stations for the public to use.

Sustainability Planning

Since we adopted the 2050 Master Plan last year, we have been working on upcoming projects to make our community more sustainable, including tree planting guidelines, drought and water conservation standards, urban heat reduction, complete street projects, and affordable housing strategies.

For more information about upcoming area planning activities, especially as we kick off our East Las Vegas area plan, visit our 2050 Plan website.

Sustainability Tips

  • Make sure your recyclables are all empty, clean and dry
  • Plant a drought tolerant tree
  • Bring your reusable produce bags along with your reusable grocery bags. Reusable produce bags can hold your produce instead of using the plastic bags the grocery stores provide
  • Avoid single-use items. Bring your reusable water bottle and coffee mugs instead of using cups that after one use, end up in the landfill
  • Follow SNWA watering guidelines and change your watering clocks: snwa.com
  • Going out to a restaurant? Bring your own tupperware for to-go items instead of using Styrofoam. Save calories and the environment
  • With high gas prices still around, try out different transportation alternatives, including with RTC Transit
  • Start a composter for your backyard garden! You can compost fruits, vegetables, and other food waste.
  • Be sure to keep your compost plant based
