Back-To-School Safety: How To Help Kids Prepare For Emergencies

Emergency planning is a key part of keeping students safe during the school year.

The new school year is right around the corner in Southern Nevada. While families are busy shopping for school supplies and clothes, it’s just as important to prepare for the unexpected.

Emergency planning is a key part of keeping students safe during the school year. The Clark County School District (CCSD) emphasizes the importance of school safety through its Office of Emergency Management and CCSD Police Department.

Together, they work with students and staff to build a culture of preparedness through emergency plans, safety training videos and monthly drills. These drills cover a range of scenarios, including fire evacuations, shelter-in-place protocols and earthquake responses.

More than 150 officers with the CCSD Police Department help protect campuses across the district. Teachers and school staff have access to a wide variety of resources to improve their own preparedness.

Families can also play a big role in school safety. Teaching children how to make an emergency plan is especially important in case a disaster happens during school hours and they’re separated from loved ones.

Younger kids can build their understanding through interactive games and age-appropriate tutorials. Teens, on the other hand, can explore hands-on preparedness activities through clubs, outreach events and training programs.

Emergencies can happen anytime—including during the school day. By making emergency planning part of your back-to-school checklist, you’ll help set the tone for a safer, more confident start to the year.
